My dog continually barks at people walking down the street when he is in our back yard - whether we are out there with him or not. Does anyone have any suggestions to make him stop? Asked by koalalvr 51 months ago Similar questions: teach dog bark people walking street 500 feet Pets > Dogs.

Provoke and correct unwanted behaviour I’m no expert, but this is what our dog trainer teacher suggested doing to discourage/stop an unwanted behavior. In this case, the unwanted behavior is your dog barking at people walking down the street. First, make yourself a rattle can--could be a large plastic bottle filled with pennies, stones, anything that will make noise.
Sometimes a soda can filled with pennies works. Just tape the top so the stones/pennies don’t fall out. Now, your best bet is to "set the stage" to provoke the dog’s unwanted behaviour, because you don’t want to just wait for it to happen. So if you can get a friend to be the walkee, that should help--otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for someone to walk by.
So, "provoke" the unwanted behaviour so you can then correct it. But never use the dog’s name or tell him/her to come when you’re provoking an unwanted behaviour. At any rate, let’s say you’ve set the stage and now your friend starts to walk by. The instant the dog barks, or even poises himself to bark, toss the rattle can at the fence or some object near the dog but NOT AT THE DOG!
Never hit the dog with anything, this is very important. The noise should scare the dog. Say NO at the same time.
(I think it’s even better if you have someone else who is hidden behind a bush or fence throw the rattle can, but this is usually not feasible.) Now the biggest thing is to act immediately, because otherwise the dog won’t no what you’re referring to when you say NO and throw the scary rattle can. Also, and this is something I hadn’t thought of before the training class, always praise your dog for not barking. If someone walks by and the dog’s barking hasn’t started in two seconds, give him great praise, Good Dog, Good Boy/Girl, lots of affection, maybe a small treat.
He’ll associate being quiet with praise. I’m assuming you already give your dog plenty of exercise, he/she is not just bored in the back yard, has a variety of toys such as Kong toys etc. To play with. If not, your dog will bark out of boredom.
This isn’t fair to your dog, or to you, or to the people who walk by. I’ve had lots of luck with the rattle can and hope it works for you as well. But remember, I’m not an expert nor a dog trainer, so you should probably run this by someone who is qualified or at least read some expert’s advice before undertaking this.

You could try to teach him a substitute behavior. For example, touching your hand with his nose. First teach him "touch".
Then, whenever people walk by, draw his attention to the "touch" command. At first, give him treats for every successful touch when he's not barking. Hopefully, this will get him in a new pattern of behavior.
I'd also suggest that you make sure you aren't letting your dog control other situations in the yard or in the house. Make sure you're the pack leader. I have the same problem, only it is 3 dogs barking at once! My dogs will bark at the window or at the fence when a car goes by, (fortunately we are on a very small cultesac, so there are very few cars), when a person walks by, or of course when they see a dog or cat. One will see it first and the others immediately join in and will not stop.
I recently started using a squirt bottle with water in it inside the house ,when all three dogs would bark like maniacs. It was something I had never tried before, and my one Border Collie mix, immediately stopped barking when I held it up and said "Squirt! ".
I cannot for the life of me understand why she did that so easily, unless someone did that to her before we rescued her. But she was always the last one to pay attention and stop barking. The others are starting to pay a fair amouont of attention to it, so things have quieted down somewhat inside.
Outside is more difficult. I need to go to the sliding glass door of the deck, and call them firmly! "Come Cody" "Come Sierra", and Mandy just follows.
Cody, (our English Setter - "horse" mix :-), most times will come barreling across the yard, slide across the deck and into the kitchen, with the others behind, but not sliding, walking a little more politely. They are starting to pay more attention, but we still have work to do. To me, getting them not to bark has been the most difficult of all training skills.
When they do come when called, I give them tons of praise and say "Good come", rather than chastising then for barking, as much as I may want to if it takes them some time to listen. However, calling them and having them come must be rewarded. I wouldn’t like it if someone called me, I came, and then they said I was bad.
That would defeat the purpose. If I have small treats handy, I will give them to them, but I don’t worry if they don’t get one. I am kind of stingy with treats, and a lot of excited praise will work just as well (well, almost....).
That has been what has worked the best for me. As I said, it’s truly a difficult feat, and takes lots of work, but I am seeing a lot of improvement. Hopefully you will also!
Remember , lots and lots of praise! Good luck and lots of patience! I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
