How do the prices compare to online discount places like Orbitz?

Cost higher---yes and no Travel agencies do charge service charges for airline tickets but so does the airlines. Since all air commissions have been taken away, travel agencies must charge to cover their staff and overhead. However, when booking with a travel agent, he/she will find you the best price possible for the type of route you request.

Many internet companies may give you the best rate however they route you with 2 or 3 stops which in my opinion doesn't save you any monies and extends your travel time. Also travel agencies like American Express, AAA, and all the biggies will not charge service charges if you book a hotel or car, tour or cruise with them. They consider that a package and one of the other components of the package usually pay commissions covering their airline costs..

ITASOFTWARE. COM Consider that when booking with travel sites such as orbitz, travelocity, and priceline. You are paying full retail and a booking fee, usually 10 -20 per ticket.

Using Amex travel agency could possibly save you some money as they might get better deals. If you check the prices on a travel site to the actual hotel or airline sight, the prices are the same. No discount usually.

This is merely a gimmick. I would however reccomend a site called Itasoftware.com. You cant actually buy from the site but it allows you to search a weekend, monthlong or any specified time period and gives you all the prices of all airlines on each day, thus showing you the cheapest days and periods to travel. It is one of those hidden gem sites, a diamond in the rough if you will.

Check it out and let me know how you liked it. I will include the link also. When you get to the homepage click on search airfares using qpx, then click on guest.

The neat think is that this program gets its prices directly from the airfare index that airlines publish to. Sources: itasoftware.com/ .

There are advantages and disadvantages to both.... You can get an Amex card and still use it to charge travel services on the discount online sellers; you're not compelled to use American Express Travel. You should be careful, though; many of the online travel sites won't let you change your mind once you've made a reservation. They almost all have steep cancellation fees, and with some you will lost all your money if something comes up and you have to change your plans.

Another thing to consider is that sometimes the online travel engines really don't give you much of a discount. You should price-shop at more than one website before booking anything online, and then make sure you understand the cancellation/change policies. Online bookings can be very convenient, but they're not very helpful if you don't already know where you want to go and what you want to do there.

A full-service travel agent (it can be American Express Travel Services, or the storefron agent just down the street from you) will do some research, has often checked out these places personally or has staff who will do that, can give you up-to-the-minute useful information (construction next door to your hideaway beach hotel, financial problems which may cause the cheapest airline to go down the tubes before your trip, off-season discounts which may be available if you change your trip dates by a week or two) which would make all the difference in how much you enjoy your trip. If you don't know a good travel agent, look for one who's a member of ASTA, the American Society of Travel Agents. They have educational requirements, performance bonds and a great network of suppliers and trip-information resources to give you the best service.

And have a great trip, of course. Roseredcity's Recommendations On the Road Again Amazon List Price: $8.98 Used from: $5.23 .

1 I probably should include that the reason for asking the question is involving the "companion ticket" offered to Platinum members. Therefore you MUST use their Travel Agency to get this benefit. If their prices are close enough to the online discount agencies, then that's fine.

What I'm wondering is if they jack up the costs of the Agency fees so much that the companion ticket is essentially worthless.

2 DigiDoc: I don't know, but don't forget you'll have to pay an annual fee to get the card, so you'll have to factor that into your price comparisons. I bet with a deal like that, they're charging you full fare on the first ticket--and that's pretty expensive! .
