It depends how they structure their contract All ball players have different needs and preferences on how they get paid. Many who sign a multi year contract will take a lump sum percentage up front and then receive weekly or monthly payments through out the year so that they are still getting a check through the off season. The way many agents structure their client’s contracts in today’s market place have what are called incentive clauses.
These incentive clauses reward the player if he should attain better than expected performance results. For example a player may make a million dollars this season, but if he should be voted into the allstar game he will receive a fifty thousand dollar bonus, if he should win the MVP award he would get an additional two hundred thousand dollars etc. Of course the owners who pay the ball players also use this technique to their own advantage, for example the recent Michael Vick situation where Vick was convicted of promoting dog fighting, the Atlanta Falcon’s are sure to nullify his remaining contract and most likely will try to recoup money all ready paid to him based on the argument that his actions have been detrimental to the franchise and he can hardly fulfill his contract while sitting in prison. As far as injuries go many owners of clubs take insurance policies out on their players so that if a player should sustain a career ending injury that player would still get paid and the club would not have to absorb the entire cost. In some sports such as football and basketball where player’s careers are many times shortened by injury there is a feeling more should be done by the players unions to create a fund where injured player’s could continue to get some pay after the player’s contract with the club expires.
Some sort of fund that is sponsored by the player’s who are enjoying long healthy careers. I believe all sports pay bonuses to the player’s for reaching the World Series or the Super Bowl etc. It is a minimal amount compared to the salaries they make today and the real glory comes from being on a world championship team. One point I do not understand is the arbitration system that goes on mostly in baseball today.
A player will sign a contract to play for your team for five years for X amount of dollars. Now let’s say the player is a pitcher in the second year of his contract, if he can prove that he pitched as well or better than any pitcher making more money than he is making, he can go to arbitration and usually renegotiate a new contract for himself even though he has three years remaining on his current contract. I hope this sheds some light on the subject for you.
