How Do You Explore The San Jacinto Wilderness In California?

San Jacinto Peak, at almost 11,000 feet, is the predominate mountain in southern California. While desert terrain encompasses the northern approach to the summit, the southern approach is alpine-like, forested with trees and brooks, and accessible via the small village of Idyllwild. The California Department of Parks and Recreation has an office there and will issue a daily wilderness pass.

A map is available so the day trekker can opt which trail to take. Getting there: From Los Angeles International Airport, Idyllwild is just over 100 miles east. Take Interstate 405 to the 10 and head east toward San Bernardino.
