Buck Teeth, or more accurately, overjet, is usually obtained by a combination of genetics and oral habits, finger sucking or even playing a clarinet. Disease can play a part in some cases also In the case of genetics, usually buck teeth occurs when the lower jaw is too small for the upper jaw. Additionally, the resultant protrusion can become more exagerated by the action of the lower lip pushing against the front upper teeth, or by the action of the tongue when swallowing (tongue thrust) Oral habits such as thumb sucking and/or pacifier use can create outward pressures during the growth stages of occlusion resulting in labially (outward direction) tilted occlusion.
This pressure can be effective if the gum is diseased or if the bone underlying the occulsion is recessed In rare cases other causes may be blamed but the above should account for the great majority of instances.
