Grieving during a loss is natural no matter how young. The sudden loss of a pet can leave a child with a lot of unanswered questions. Communication is important.
Sometimes the best way for a child to communicate is through imagination. Writing letters to the pet allows closure. Saying 'hello' and 'I miss you' or even drawing pictures of the pet can help create a positive emotional response.
Allowing time is important. Generally noticeable behavior linked to loss and grieving lasts 6 months with younger children. Buying a pet right away my not be the best solution, rather more of a coverup.
GIve her time and tools. Make playful memories: letters, pictures, a special bird book made by your niece and perhaps other family members which can be read at nighttime for happy memories... give the book a happy ending... a wonderful world of beautiful birds with melodious songs... even make up a song. Whatever creative ways become her safety to express, allow her to feel and help her to heal.(which it sounds like your doing).

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
