Knitting, basically, consists of two stitches: the knit and purl stitches. They're mirror images of each other. Since you must flip the needle with each alternating row, you're alternately working the right and wrong sides of your project.
For many projects, you want a uniform appearance to the right side. Therefore, it's necessary, when working the wrong side, to have a stitch to mirror the stitch of the right side. Begin with all stitches on one needle.
Hold this needle in your non-dominant hand. Locate the loop of the first stitch on the full needle. Bring that loop towards the end of the needle.
At the same time, be careful to not allow the stitch to slip off the needle. Bring the yarn leading to the ball or skein to the front of your project. Insert the empty needle into the first loop.
Approach it from the back and insert into the loop from the back to the front. Wrap the yarn once around the needle and bring the needle back through. This draws the wrapped yarn through the loop.
