A garter is probably the second best known bridal accessory after the bouquet. They are that small swatch of satin and lace that lives high on the bride's thigh. Bridal garters can be any where from simple to elaborate and making your own can ensure that you get exactly what you want.
Measure your thigh at the height that you will be wearing your garter. Fold your fabric strip in half. Make sure you fold length-wise and with the wrong side facing out.
Sew the edge and turn the tube of fabric right side out. Center the seam in the back and iron it flat. The seam will be against your leg now and no one will see it.

Lace garters are a girly addition to bridal outfits. They're sexy and feminine--and also easy to make. You can make your own bridal garter cheaply and easily in an afternoon.
Pin the shorter lace to the long top edge of one of the ribbon strips. Pin the second ribbon strip to the lace, so that the bottom of the shorter lace is sandwiched between the two ribbon pieces. Sew the pinned section together close to the ribbon's top edge.
Sandwich the top part of the wider lace between the bottom edges of the ribbon. Pin them together and sew, leaving the short ends open. Measure the elastic around your leg so that it fits comfortably around your thigh, adding about half an inch to the length to be safe.
Cut the elastic at this length. Attach the safety pin to the edge of one side of the elastic and push the safety pin and elastic through the two feet of ribbon. This should ruffle your ribbon and lace.
Pin together the two ends, making sure to catch the elastic, and sew the two ends together. ... more.
