There are several recipes for homemade potting soil, many of them containing peat moss. Peat moss, which is valued for its ability to retain large quantities of water and air, is generally the main ingredient in potting mixtures that don't contain soil. Because peat moss is acidic, the addition of limestone to the mix is usually required.
This helps to bring the pH to a more neutral state. Look for peat moss that is lighter in color, as it is younger and holds more air. Place the screen over the wheelbarrow.
Pour the ingredients (sphagnum peat, vermiculite, bonemeal, ground limestone and bloodmeal) onto the screen and sift well. Water the mixture thoroughly with a garden hose. Place the wheelbarrow in an area that remains warm, with lots of air circulation.
Blood meal emits ammonia the first time it comes into contact with water. Wait at least one week, to allow the ammonia to dissipate prior to using. More.
