How Do You Play With Preschool Children?

Educators refer to this age of wonder as the representational play stage. Children between the ages of 3 and 5 may stick a toothpick into an acorn top and call it an umbrella. To get the most out of playtime, allow yourself to be led and get ready for a glimpse into the real and imaginary world of your child.

Give your child a brief notice that you will be ready to play. One to two minutes is all they'll need to devise a play scheme. Any longer will make them anxious.

Let your child dictate the rules and roles. She may tell you, "We're having tea with the queen today. I want you to sit over here."

Play your role. You're an actor and your child is the director. You will be given a designation and it's likely to be a supporting role.

You may even be given specific dialogue. Show enthusiasm for your role. If your son says, "We have to go put out a fire," say something like, "Can I ride on the truck?"

Then accept the following decision. He may tell you, "No, I'm riding on the truck. You ... more.
