APA format was created by the American Psychological Association as the referencing standard for writing in the social sciences. Initially, referencing in APA format provided standards for referencing books, papers and periodicals, but it has now expanded to include electronic sources as well. Sources like Wikipedia are discouraged in an academic setting because their authorship is unreliable, but there is still a standard for APA referencing of a Wikipedia page.
