Reformatting your Dell computer with Windows XP allows you to create a new hard drive partition and essentially "start over" on your computer and hard disk. While it will take several minutes to run through the wizard involved, you will not need to have special training or existing knowledge to complete the reformatting process yourself. All you will need on hand is your Windows XP CD and a CD, flash drive, or zip disk for backup storage.
Back up any files and data you wish to keep before reformatting your Dell computer. Use a CD, flash drive or zip disk to do so. Insert your Windows XP CD into your Dell computer.
Restart your computer. Wait for the "Welcome to Setup" page to load after your computer restarts. Select "Enter."
Hit the "F8" button on your Dell computer's keyboard to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. At this point, you may be asked to repair an existing Windows XP installation, if applicable. You may opt out of the repair by pressing the "Esc" key, or activate ... more.
Sometimes it is necessary to reformat your computer's hard drive, erase all its data, and start from scratch. Here's how to do it with Windows XP. Open up the computer's CD tray and place the Windows XP Setup/Install CD into the tray.
Shutdown the computer. Turn the computer back on and watch the screen for a message that says "Press any key to boot from CD...". If you do not see this screen come up, you will need to change the order of your boot devices in the computer's BIOS so that the CD drive is first.
It will take a while for the setup process to prepare the necessary setup files but it will eventually finish and reach the "Welcome to Setup" menu. Press ENTER. Press F8 to agree to the licensing agreement.
Press ESCAPE to continue installing a fresh copy of XP. For each partition listed, highlight it and press D to delete it and then L to confirm deletion. Once all of the partitions are deleted, select the remaining single unpartitioned space and press ENTER to start the ... more.
