How Do You Troubleshoot A Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker?

Ice makers, including those in Maytag refrigerators, are not immune from problems. But before you call Maytag or a repair service, try some basic troubleshooting to see if you can diagnose and fix the problem yourself. Doing so may save you time and money.

Check the shutoff arm or switch to make sure it is in the "on" position. All Maytag ice makers have a shutoff to prevent the ice maker from producing too much ice. Open the water shutoff valve.

To make ice, a water line has to be run to your Maytag refrigerator. That line will likely have a small valve allowing the line to be shut off to make repairs. If you are not getting any ice or your ice cubes are too small, make sure the valve is fully open, and that it has no kinks that could restrict water flow.

Clear the ice ejector and dispose of any cubes that have already been made. Occasionally an ice cube will melt or get jammed in the ejector, preventing more ice from being made. Check the freezer door and bin.

GE icemakers are a popular addition to any GE refrigerator unit. They also, unfortunately, have a tendency to not work, or break down. Some problems are easy to fix; others, however, will take more effort and you will need to order new parts.

The most common problems with GE icemakers appear to be that the thermistor either opens or shorts, or the auger screw breaks. Test the themistor if the LED light (located on the right-hand side of the icemaker) starts flashing on and off. This means that the icemaker is in the Fault mode.

Locate the thermistor in the icemaker's circuit board (See your user manual for the exact location in your particular icemaker.) Pull it out and connect the thermistor's terminals to the leads of a volt/ohm meter. If your thermistor tests bad, you'll need to purchase a new one. If the thermistor tests good but the icemaker still does not work correctly, and the unit is still in Fault mode, you will most likely need to purchase a new icemaker.
