They occasionally test vaccines and certain chemicals, or even bacteria or viruses on certain types of animals, and register the effects to create vaccines, though they don't usually use anything besides mice, rats, or even maybe monkeys. The mutations of animals aren't like in the cartoons, though, so don't expect to see a nine-headed giant behemoth rat from the Nutcracker walking around.
