How does carbon dioxide enter the leaves of plants?

CO2 enters the leaf through tiny pores in the leaf surface called stomata. Water is lost through these same pores, and in fact, outward water movement is required to compensate for inward movement of CO2 Stomata are known to close in conditions of stress, such as drought or extreme heat. When stomata are closed, CO2 movement into the leaf stops.
