Finasteride (Propecia), a hair loss medication, prevents conversion of the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. By doing this, the testosterone cannot cause the hair follicles to shut down. The drug can, indeed, prevent ongoing loss of hair but cannot cause lost hairs to regrow.
Propecia is taken daily; sexual side effects occur in over 3% of patients. These include less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, and decrease in the amount of semen. Propecia should be taken only by men.
