How does ordering of cell phones/plans work on amazon, do they do the credit check when you place the order or later?

Before the order ships... they will forward your information to the carrier and the carrier will check your credit. Once the credit check is done then the order will ship out if the carrier give the approval. If you require a deposit, the credit check will be denied.

Then you will need to work that out with the carrier or Amazon.com won't be able to ship the order. You can extend your service contract with AT&T through Amazon.com but you must meet certain requirements. I'm not sure what carrier you are going with, but it is sometimes helpful to call them for advice beforehand.
