How does the amount of iPad's sold compare to the amount of ereaders sold?

Amazon (the biggest player in the eReader market has never been forthcoming with exact details about how many Kindles they have sold, so it’s difficult, but not impossible to compare. A report from IDC Worldwide indicated that in the third quarter, there were about 4.8 million tablet computers shipped. Of those 4.8 million, about 4.2 million of them (or about 87% of them) were the iPad.In the same quarter, IDC estimates that there were about 1.1 million shipments of Amazon’s Kindle.

Apple just released full quarter details which included the news that they shipped 7.33 million iPad units in their latest quarter. There were some analyst reports in late 2010 that had Kindle figures (for the holiday quarter) at about 5.5 million units. This would definitely seem to indicate that the iPad is outselling the Kindle – not by a huge margin, but still beating a pretty comfortably.
