There are currently three different models to the Sony eReader, the Daily Edition, the Pocket Edition and the Touch Edition. The Sony eReader Daily Edition and the eReader Pocket edition has a 2GB Memory card as well as an expansion slot for Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick Duo, expandable up to 32GB. The Pocket edition also has a 2GB memory but no expansion slot.
The iPad, on the other hand, has 6 different models available in 3 different memory sizes; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. There is no available expansion slot for the iPad. The average size of an eBook is between 200-300KB.
You are right in saying that you do not need that much space for an eBook, however, both devices can be used for viewing photos as well as play audio files. In addition, for the iPad, you can also play games, edit and create documents, as well as perform other tasks on the device. Sources: http://ebookstore.sony.com/reader/ http://www.apple.com/ipad.
