My 20-yr-old says he has virtually no memories before age 7, very few before age 11. Trying to determine whether this is w/in normal range or something to worry about. Asked by sloemommy 50 months ago Similar questions: back childhood memory early start Business > Financial Services.

Get This... I don't have a formal educated answer but was talking about this very subject with a MFT recently. She said some people can remember their own birth. That remembering back to a few weeks old is actually possible.
I can't hardly imagine that. That being said. I have memories back to age 18 months ish.
I am really not sure if there is a definitive answer to this quetion. My understanding of the brain is that there are no universal rules about how the memory works and no steadfast rules that apply to all individuals about how far back someone can remember. I have a near photographic memory but that for me means that things I read I generally remember.
If I am told something I don't always remember it.
I don't think that this is a normal age for the cut-off of memory, but I wouldn't be too concerned. I have distinct memories of a house we moved out of when I was 2. I remember the kitchen, 2 sets of stairs going upstairs (that was a big thing), a tree in the backyard that I'd bend my fingernail back on, the nextdoor neighbors' name, and walking to church 1 day.
Have you tried prompting him with questions about trips or visits that occured before age seven? How about a house you used to live in? Or his kindergarden, 1st or 2nd grade?
Maybe you have pictures to remind you of a specific play he was in so you could ask him "do you remember being in the school play when you played a ...?" or how about the time you fell and chipped your tooth? Specific things may jog a memory he doesn't know he has. And I say that you should look at those pictures because if you show him, that can plant the memory at that moment.
If someone asks me to remember my childhood, it's such a vague question, that I say I don't remember much. But if they say do you remember the cat, dog, boat, trip to Disney, camping trip, a certain Christams present (maybe), etc, I say oh, yeah, I remember that. Especially if the weather was bad- odd.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
