How far has the US slipped in it's role as paragon of freedom and liberty, that Russia can legitimately condemn the?

Any country can say anything they want about us; doesn't mean it's true, especially when it comes from a long time adversary of us. I'd say take it with a grain of salt. The events they point out as "injustices" are real, of course, but the "injustice" is open for interpretation; what makes a difference is that we admit to them, and deal with them.

We are learning as we go, and trying to do what's right. We make mistakes. We learn from them.

Let's see....how many people are flocking to live in Russia, as opposed to the US? I guess despite our " terrible reputation", people still see it as a pretty good place to live.

However, in this instance, the allegations are true, from murdering innocent people to keeping people locked up without due process to torture and rendition. None of that can be denied, because they have all been proven true. Schelli 12 days ago .

Yes we've slipped - no doubt about it. But "those in glass houses..." I have a hard time that it's Russia; next North Korea will be attacking us for human rights issues. Truth is more palatable when it comes from respectable sources and at this point in history Russia is a virtual dictatorship.

I worry about going in that direction basis current political climate but I don't want to hear that that eatting meat is unethical from the mouth of a cannibal.

I concur with TLW. This is largely a smokescreen, pointing out the mote in our eyes to try to distract from the beam in theirs. We definitely need to do better on our human rights record, though I'd say our worst offenses aren't in either the relatively small number of people executed or prisoners in Guantanamo, but the fact that we lock up more of our civilian population than anybody else.

Russia is second. nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri_per_cap-c...That" rel="nofollow">nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri_per_cap-c... is the real concern: we deal with crime by incarceration. It appears to be working, to be honest: crime is falling, and has been for some 20 years:upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2... it's clearly coming at a price in freedom.

We need to have a serious look at ourselves. Russia, however, is not going to use that fact to distract from their own abysmal record. Com/graph/cri_pri_per_cap-crime-prisoners-per-capita.

I fail to see the legitimacy from a government that routinely executes and imprisons political opponents, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with their policies. I am not surprised that you agree with them.

The US is supposed to be a guiding light to the world and set the example, not follow the same paths as other countries, or we truly are no better than them, no matter what we think in our arrogance. Schelli 11 days ago .

It reminds me of a joke where a CEO sent out the following memo to his employees:"It has come to my attention that some of you are having a couple of vodka martinis during lunch so people can't smell the alcohol on your breath. In the future I would appreciate it if you would use gin instead of vodka. I would rather have our customers think you are drunk than stupid.

Well, there's two sides to that - yes, they have a valid point that our slip is showing. However, it doesn't excuse their own.

True, but they should never be able to point to the hypocrisy in the first place - we are supposed to be better than that. Schelli 12 days ago .

Gosh, next thing we know the UN will be concerned with human rights in the USA! Oh wait, they already have said that! Yep, the UN that ignored the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in country after country, from Rwanda to Cambodia to Uganda.........just keep on with third-world country after dictator-run country.

And we're supposed to worry about Russia's stand on human rights? Russia has no stand on human rights.........within their own borders.

What I am saying is that the United States of America IS a beacon of light to the rest of the world. And no, I am not saying that it's okay to be a crook as long as the police are worried about catching other crooks. But I am saying that although the USA is not perfect, it does strive to stand for good and to do good.

Our political system demands it, and we who live here are the beneficiaries........and the people who come here, both legally and illegally........recognize the value of the USA and salute it by their desire to be here. And what I am saying is that the United Nations is a toothless tiger, a beast who looks the other way when horror is taking place, lest it might have to take a stand. I am saying that the UN majors on minors......and that the UN is a joke, a bad joke.

Last I looked there isn't a great big ole fence surrounding the United States and keeping us all in. Heck, if people want to move to Russia where life is better, bye now. I am sick of people insulting my country and I know I am not alone in that feeling.

Last I looked there isn't a great big ole fence surrounding the United States..." This is unfortunate, or we wouldn't have the issues we do with illegals. Schelli 12 days ago .

Schelli you always report the twisted truth and are always the first to line up to throw stones at your own country. Happy New Year.

I don't report anything. I provide links to others who do the reporting. Ithrow stones at our country because I know it's wounded, mostly through the actions of GWB and the GOP, and I want so much for it to heal itself, and to get tohers to help that process.

Our country is greater than the cesspit we have allowed the 1%ers and corporations to turn it into. There is no point in blindly defending it when it needs help haeling, if it's not too late. Schelli 12 days ago .

America uber ales is not the right approach when something is broken and needs fixing - that mindset just leads to Nazi Germany. Schelli 11 days ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
