It normally takes a week or two, but you can get it de-indexed in 24 hours if you first unpublish it, and then submit the URL to Google's URL removal tool. You will find it if you log in to Google's Webmaster Tools section.
I've done the same, in the past and typically 1-5 days is all it takes.
Not exactly an answer to your question, but I thought you might want to consider this. I have my own website now. Instead of taking my articles down, I put a synopsis of them on my website with a link sending them to my hub.
Then, on my hub, I put a link so they can get back to my website.
It works well for me with traffic being sent from different sources.
Thanks for asking this question. I got some useful insight regarding this subject.
Specially the answer by @mistyhorizon2003 & @frugalfamily were good. It gave some really good tips that I have been looking for.
I do the same as frugalfamily. I write a little synopsis on my blog with a link over to hubpages. In addition you can add the widget to your site which gives links to your latest hubs.
I found that I get quite a bit of traffic from my blog to my hubs.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
