How long does it take for a new movie in theaters to come out in DVD?

That totally depends on how popular the movie is. If it is a big hit, it will stay in the theaters longer, delaying the DVD. If it turns-out to be a dog, it might be on DVD much sooner.

And, then there are the real dogs, so bad that they never even make-it to any theater & go right to DVD.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
