Basically, never Fertilizer: Fertilizer never goes bad. Even when it becomes compacted and hard, all you need to do is take a hammer and break it apart. However, spread the compacted pieces sparingly to not destroy the roots.

It is good at least two years. We have always used Scotts Turfbuilder Plus 2 on our lawns, and it does a fantastic job. Our lawn usuanlly looks better then the ones that have Chemlawn come out and spray for weeds.

We often have some left over from each use, and have always used it the next year with no decrease in effectiveness. We have used it the second year form both an open bag, and an unopened one, and the results never vary. Sources: my opinion .
