The strain gauge doesn't measure strain on a utm it measures stress(force) the strain is the movement (bending stretching) of the test piece.(it measures the strain of its own calibrated bar) you can measure the stress with a hydraulic load cell and a good pressure gauge and other ways possible depending on the level of force required. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
