How much damage to a child can emotional abuse/ neglect do in comparison to physical abuse from the parents?

Emotional child abuse is defined as "constant negative messages" which can have a long-lasting negative effects on the child or youth. The closer relation to the abuser and its ill psychological effects to the abused is directly proportional. As the frequency, intensity and duration of abuse increase so as the psyche of that child or youth.

The effects of emotional abuse is more physiological than previously thought. There was a study where severely maltreated Romanian children showed striking lesions in certain areas of their brain. There was an increased release of stress hormones that attacked the sensitive tissue of the brain and destroyed the newly-formed brain cells.

The areas of their brain which is responsible for the "management" of their emotions were 20% to 30% smaller compared to other children of the same age. It is concluded that this damage can result in any child who suffered emotional abuse not only Romania but also those who were abandoned and maltreated. These are the effects of emotional abuse: 1.

Problems in speech 2. Delayed motor development 3. Infants fail to develop or thrive 4.

Facial tics 5. Disorders in eating 6. Drug or substance abuse 7.
