How much should a person charge for proofreading?

That depends on WHAT you proofread. I used to work for a publisher years ago and they paid me a nice salary for proofreading a magazine. The time involved, the level of importance of the material, the difficulty of the subject matter, special terminology involved (do you have to purchase special dictionaries, like if you are going to proof techincal stuff that has its own lingo) all of that goes into the price.

After that I worked in different places for a while, and some paid by word, others by line. If you are going to freelance, you have to sit down and consider all of the above. Wish you well!

I really liked this sheet from the Editorial Freelancers Association on rates: the-efa.org/res/rates.phpI charge per hour, but I usually base it on the word count. For instance, if I am proofing a 6,000 word document, I know I can proof at least 3,000 words an hour, so I bid it out as a two hour project. If it winds up taking me longer than two hours, I usually eat the costs, but that rarely happens.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
