All surgery has risks. The risk of death from the surgery is about one half of one percent (0.5%). The most serious complications are heart attack or sudden change in heart rhythm, blood clots or leaks.
Each of these occurs in about 1-2% of cases. It is important to remember that these risks can occur after any operation, and are not unique to obesity surgery.
