An engagement ring is very special to most women and should be thought out before purchasing. You can make the purchase without her, if you intend to surprise her when you pop the question, or if you are both already in on the plans, take her shopping with you and see what she likes. There are no rules on what stone must be on the ring, many women prefer their birthstone to a diamond, while other women that are traditionalists, prefer to stick with the diamond.

Then there are the other women that will love whatever their future husband picks out for them, no matter the color or type of gemstone, but they will love it because he picked it out. I would recommend you look around at different shops. Most jewelry stores have their own jeweler and their own designs.

Beyond looking at the gemstone in the ring, is the design of the ring itself. As far as how much to spend would depend on your finances. Some men are able to go in and pay for the ring in one visit, while others pay for it over time.
