How to Convert Metric Units?

The easiest method to use when converting Metric units to English units is understand what the basis of each unit. Metric units are based on ten (10). To determine the next unit is to multiply the previous by ten.

If one (1) centimeter is equivalent to 10mm, then 1 Meter is equivalent to 100 cm (10 x 10=100) and 1 Kilometer (100 x 10= 1000) is 1000m. Assuming you already know the English units, 12 inches is 1 foot and 3 feet or 36 inches = 1 yard and so on. To find larger units multiply and smaller ones are divided.

You will need to know the conversion rates in order to convert from one unit to the other. You simply take the conversion rate and multiply by the number of units (how many meters= 5 yards), then you would write something like this 0.914m x 5 =4.57200 meters in 5 yards.
