How to start a freelance business editing images online I want to edit pictures for people online. I have setup a website and taken care of all the programming aspects (I am a full time web developer so that was the easy part) I have decided to use Paypal for receiving payments from people. The thing I wanted some direction with was what do I need to do from a tax/legal perspective before I start taking on customers.Do I have to fill out any forms and register a business.
How do I handle taxes etc. My only overheads are a few pieces of software and my own time.So there isn't any inventory or wages to keep track off. I would appreciate any guidance in this matter. Thanks :) Asked by dr3amer 41 months ago Similar questions: start freelance business editing images online Business > Small Business.

I perform a similar (although a completly difference service) function You need a tax ID number for your business, among other things. You should treat your work as if you are an independent contractor to people and keep track of all your expenses, and your receipts for them, as well as any revenue that comes in. Obviously, the difference between your revenue and expenses is what you will pay taxes on.
Remember, the equipment you own - such as computers, software, chairs, printers - anything - have a depreciation value. irs.gov/businesses/small/index.htmlBusiness lady with florist company A-Z Index for BusinessFind it Fast! Know what you're looking for and want to find it fast?

If you are going to be doing business as the sole owner, you do not need to do anything other than registering your name If you will be conducting your business as the sole owner, you will be a sole proprietor, and as such you do not need to do anything. If you plan on naming your business something other than your legal name, I would encourage you to register your business name with your City Hall. Just pay them a visit, fill the form DBA (doing business as) pay the fee, (around $20?).
And your name is protected, and everything is nice and legal. Unless you sell, ship things to customers you do not need to apply for any special business license (like a tax certificate) There are other things you may want to consider. I would encourage you to look into forming an s corporation or an llc, to protect yourself, just in case!
Keep track of all your expenses, save your receipts, keep track of all your sales and other income. You will need it to prepare your tax return at the end of the year. Take a deep breath and go for it.
Legal & Financial Considerations of Starting an Online Business One of the major benefits of starting an online based business is that the initial investment required is substantially less than a brick and mortar business. However, one of the most common causes of failure of any businesses is under capitalization. In many cases, we believe business owners run into difficulty not because they may lack the budget required to run their business,... but because they start a business at a time when they need a certain level of income to survive.
While it's great to start out with high expectations and enthusiasm, it's important to be realistic - most businesses will not produce a steady income for the first couple of years. Additionally, in order to grow your business, you should plan on reinvesting any profit back into the business for at least a year or two. Local Legal Considerations of Starting an Online Business Before starting any business you will need to check the zoning laws and business license requirements for your local area.
You may be able to get all the information you need from your local government, but it is advisable to consult an attorney to be sure you get started on the right side of the law. It would be a shame to get your business going and then face fines or being closed down because you are violating local laws. National and International Legal ConsiderationsThere are also international and national laws to research and consider.
There are numerous U.S. FTC regulations for online business (including privacy policies and collecting information from children) and they apply to anyone who does any business in the US.
