Warren served as an initial consultant for the movie. (The filming period had no official "technical advisor," but rather, a set meteorologist for weather reports and crew safety.) The actual characters were based on scientists from a midwestern university. (Warren, is a journalist not a scientist).
Warren's black chase truck was in use many years before the movie and had no relation. In an interesting footnote, the original "Chaser" script by Warner Bros. (Peter Iliff script) was going to be partially based on Warren's character but it was dropped for the final "Hollywood" script.
