How would compare today in the USA to the Roman Empire? They say history repeats itself, so is the US doomed?

It took Rome over 3 centuries to "collapse", since Emperor Marcus Aurelius, at the greatest extent of the Roman Empire. Some historians even argue it took over 4, since the decline of the Roman Republic. Long after Emperor Aurelius, Christians took over and made it a Christian Empire, and then later the empire was split into halves, Western and Eastern, both theocracies.

So, how about if we blamed the rise of Christianity for the Fall of Rome? By the time the City of Rome finally and actually fell to an invading army in 410 AD, it was a Christian emperor (Honorius) that lost to a Christian Visigoth king, (Alaric). Pagans were largely out of the picture by then.

Even St Augustine shortly afterwards wrote of Rome as the "City of God", not Sodom and Gomorrah, trying to make the argument that it wasn't the Christians fault that it fell, but that it was due to the corrupting influence of pagans present. But modern people never grow tired of reading morals into this Fall of Rome, claiming that "American is following the same path because please enter your favorite peeve here--kicking out God and morals, gays, Nancy Pelosi, etc." It's not so different from how a number of television prophets claimed that the reason for the 9/11 attacks was that it was God's punishment for America allowing gays to flourish. This is because too many people only have a comic book understanding of the history of the Roman Empire, a ridiculous oversimplification and compression of all the centuries of things that have happened during its existence.

I could just as well argue that "America collapsed because it had suffered witches to live for too long before finally deciding to burn them at stake.

Christianity caused the collapse of the Romans and caused the Dark Ages. Liberals will save America. Republicans will bankrupt the US. Christianity makes people stupid.

Knowing when and when not to fight, when and when not to nurture and to never lose your open mind is what saves a civilization.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
