You want to use 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. NO honey or food coloring should be used... but, I'm sure you know that. I LOVE to watch hummingbirds!

My dad got me started with them. One time he was sitting on his back porch and a hummingbird came, ate some nectar, then came over and hovered in front of dad's face. So, he stuck his finger out like you would for a parakeet, and the little hummer LANDED ON HIS FINGER!

It sat there for maybe 10 seconds, then took off. He said he tried many times to get one to light on his finger again, but it never happened again. Here's a couple pictures of Hummers on tree limbs in my front yard.

Here's a couple of 'em at the feeder. Lucky You big lucky. The hummers are already there for you. We have such a short season for them here.

I put feeders and misters out everywhere for them. I really think the hummingbirds are my favorite aspect of summer. I love traveling out west to see the many varieties they have out there.

Some are so much more vibrant than the Ruby Throated hummers we have in the east. As for your solution, it should be 1 part sugar dissolved in 4 parts water. You can put red food coloring in if you want, but it's not necessary to do so.

Make sure the water is originally hot enough to dissolve the sugar, but don't pour the hot solution into the feeder. Let it cool. I'll frequently make up a large batch and keep it in the fridge for a few days so I can refill conveniently.

When you do refill, remember to clean your feeders thoroughly. Bacteria can really build up and make hummers sick. I'm envious Helen.

We have weeks to go until we'll see our first hummingbird. I can't wait.

My recipe Although I've read the ratio is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, I put a scant 1/4 cup of sugar in my one-cup Pyrex measuring cup. That's more like 1:3 but who can measure 1/5 of a cup? Then I add hot water to the 1 cup line.

I microwave it for a minute so the sugar dissolves, stir it, let it cool, then fill the feeder. I don’t think you need to fully boil it (I never have), but do let it cool. I don’t add any red food coloring.

I’ve read that’s unnecessary. I swap it out every week because they say it ferments and the birds get drunk. Although I’ve never actually seen a drunk hummingbird (FWI?

FUI? ), I do it anyway! If I don’t, in our hot weather, it tends to get some gray fuzzy stuff in it which I presume is mold.

We named our hummingbirds. I wonder when Zippy and Mrs. Zippy (Mississippi! Get it?

) will be back this year? Zippy, is that you? SharonW's Recommendations Aspects Hummingbird Hummzinger Excel Feeder (6 feeding ports - 16-oz feeder - 8'' diameter) Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 28 reviews) This is the one I have.

I like that it's flat rather than deep so more of the water is accessible for a longer time.

From rubythroat.org Here’s their recommendation: RECIPE FOR ARTIFICIAL HUMMINGBIRD NECTAR (4:1) Pour four cups of hot tap water into a large pot or pan (glass, enamel, or stainless steel, if possible; try not to use aluminum). Add one cup of table sugar (DO NOT use honey, artificial sweeteners, or other sugar substitutes). Stir until all sugar has dissolved.

Cover the pan, place on a hot burner, and bring the mix to a rolling boil for 1-2 minutes; be careful not to let water evaporate (if you do, the mix can become too concentrated). Let mix cool and pour into in well-cleaned feeders. Boiling, which retards mold growth, is NOT necessary if your hummingbirds are draining the feeders within three days.

Red food coloring is unnecessary, especially after birds have found the feeders; besides, modern hummingbird feeders all have red plastic bases and/or yellow flowers the birds can easily see. NOTE: There is no evidence that food coloring currently available in grocery stores or in commercial hummingbird nectar mixes is harmful to humans or to hummingbirds, but it IS an additive. Store excess mix in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks (check for fermentation or mold; if the mix is cloudy, discard it).

Some people freeze their mix and safely store it for much longer periods. In any case, let mix warm to room temperature before filling feeders. The water:sugar ratio of 4:1 is typical of the sugar concentration found in many flowers used by hummingbirds.

There is no concrete evidence stronger sugar concentrations will hurt hummingbirds, but even a 3:1 mix spoils much faster than 4:1, and 2:1 is too syrupy and a real waste of sugar. In hot weather when energy demands are not as high for hummingbirds, you can even cut the mix back to 5:1 or 6:1 and save even more money on sugar. This is how I make it: One part sugar and 4 parts water (ie one half cup of sugar and two cups of water), bring to a boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Let cool, fill feeder, and refrigerate leftover syrup. No need to add any food coloring, which can actually be harmful to hummingbirds.

As long as the feeder has bright colors to attract the hummingbirds, they'll find the syrup. This site has some great tips on hummingbird feeders. There's also a little hummingbird that follows your mouse around, which is kind of cute.
