The DRIVER is insured on a rental, not the car. Only LISTED Drivers, on the RENTAL AGREEMENT are valid drivers (have permission), which will also VOID your insurance coverage for the rental, if you're not listed on the agreement. YES you need your own insurance on the rental.
DO NOT USE THEIR INSURANCE, it will have a 3000 deductible, meaning most minor accidents will be paid for by you, not the insurance and you will pay the first $3000 damages, if there are any at all. Your personal insurance will provide much better rates, and cost less than what they may provide.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
