I am a Type II Diabetic. I know what the Fasting blood sugar should be. But what about during the day?
I don't know how high is permissible. Yesterday my fasting level was 92 which I know is good, but later in the day, a couple of hours after a meal, it was 137. I have no idea what is considered okay.
Up until now, I have only taken fasting samples, but recently heard it was a good idea to sometimes check other times. Also, once in a while, maybe every two weeks, I feel dizzy, and I want to take it then. I am usually away from home, so I figure I better start carrying my monitor around with me (not really so difficult).
I am on oral meds twice daily. Thanks! Asked by anniemdaffodils 41 months ago Similar questions: Type II Diabetic Fasting blood sugar Health > Conditions & Diseases.

First the good news 137 a couple of hours after a meal is pretty good. Slightly elevated levels are expected up to 4 hours after a meal as your body breaks down the carbs. Keeping it under 160 during digestion should be acceptable, but if you don’t want to fret, wait until four hours instead of just two.
I stayed on oral meds for 15 years and then had to go to insulin. Pills are so much more convenient but they’re not going to be as precise. As long as you can can maintain HGBA1C levels (this test measures 3 month average) of 6 or less you will be doing fine.As far as dizzyness goes, each of us reacts differently to low and high blood sugars.
Some people do get dizzy when they are out of whack on either end. I never felt anything when I had 500+ values before I was diagnosed and when I skipped meals after diagnosis and they slipped down to 70 I knew before checking because I would get the shakes, not dizzy. However there are two things that go hand in hand with diabetes that can make you dizzy.
Gh blood pressure is one. If you want to follow up on that for about $30 you can get a wrist BP monitor and check when you feel dizzy. Then there are also kidney problems that can throw off your chemistry so you should note if you still have to drink or go to the bathroom too often.
Lastly your body is not going to take as much stress now so you have to make sure you are getting enough sleep because being tired can make you feel a little woozy. The thing that has been most helpful to me is that my HMO has a diabetes educator. Every few years, if I seem to be slipping up, I check in with her and she makes me do a food/meds/testing diary so that we can figure out any adjustments I need to make.
She can concentrate on me in a way a Dr. doesn't have time for. Ask your Dr if your plan or his practice has a diabetes or health educator. Checking the glucometer readings after a meal is not of much value. The best times of day to check your blood sugar readings is: 1. Fasting, early morning 2.
Just before lunch 3. Just before supper 4. Bedtime 5.
Immediately when feeling dizzy, weak, nauseous keep a written record of the readings, including the time you took the pills and the times of the readings. Take this record to the doctor at every appointment, and review it with him/her, or with the dietitian who is managing your diet (usually done for those on insulin). Your endocrinologist can tell you the "numbers" to watch for, but without your personal glucometer record, he cannot pinpoint a specific problem or know how to adjust your pills. It is important to eat your meals and take your meds on a regular schedule.
Yes! Take your glucometer with you, and also something to eat if you see that the reason you are dizzy is because of low blood sugar. Peanut butter on bread or toast is good, or a protein combined with a carbohydrate.
For fast-acting boost, take some honey- it starts absorbing right from your mouth. Candy is ok for an emergency, but not as good as a sandwich for stabilizing your glucose level. diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/complicat..." rel="nofollow">diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/complicat... Ask some nurses, if you know any. I am a diabetic too I take my blood sugar test about six times a day unless I am outside. Of course sometimes I run in trouble with low blood sugar. It is normal to have a higher blood sugar after a meal.My suggestion to you is not only to see an endocronologist, but a nutritionist who specialize in diabetes.
The best people to ask are the professionals. My experiences is that doctors of any kind usually don't know anything about nutrition, and in particular about the right kinds of food diabetes should be eating. I am not talking about sweets.
There are others foods that can play havoc with your blood sugar like carbs. You can check with the american diabetes association.
