I am considering Satellite high-speed internet for my home. Have you used this type of internet before? What is your opinion on the speed of the service, reliability, etc?I live in an area where only cable modem is available, but the company that offers it has a monopoly.

They charge extremely high rates, and the service is not reliable. I also currently have DirecTV, and have a perfectly clear view of the southern sky. I'm not quite sure if we'll be using the gaming option, but I'd like to have that ability if we choose to.

I'd also like to be able to visit Askville from home. I miss you guys, and go into withdrawals when I can't visit during work hours. But then again, they do pay me to work and not to play on the internet.

WildBlue is our internet provider at work. (I have dial-up at home) WildBlue is our internet provider at work, I only have dial-up at home. There is (and will be) no cable run on my dirt road.

We have DirecTV too. wildblue.com/getWildblue/expert/wildblue... We pay about $50.00 per month for our satellite service. There is a limit to how much you can upload and download each month, but I've never gone over the limit.

If you want to download movies and music this could be a major consideration. As for the service, it's pretty darn reliable. I live in northern NY and I lose service when it rains cats and dogs, or if we're having a blizzard. It's about the same as our DirecTV.

We lose reception during bad weather. As for the internet speed .. . If dial up is one end of the spectrum and RoadRunner is the other end, the satellite is exactly half-way.

Anything is better than dial-up. If you actually have a choice of getting cable internet or satellite: CABLE ALL THE WAY. If you really can't stand the cable company and won't buy from them, satellite isn't that bad, but it's not that good either.

Hope this helps. Depends! Satellite speeds for download to your system are extremely fast and good no matter whom is the provider! The draw back to every satellite system is the "upload speeds" which are 128kbs to around 300kbs and this is far to slow to play internet games of any quaility.

If games are desired you need to seek the highest "upload speeds" that are available and sometimes this is the more expensive providers....Many people have asked me about the very question you have asked...All I can say is its the "UPLOAD SPEED" that makes for fast back and forth communications and especially playing games on the interenet. I wish I could give you what you desire: But, thats what providers provide..check what they say they will provide in "UPLOAD SPPED" and even in downloads where normally satelite beats many but only in downloads to your home. I had a system for about two years... since I lived out in the boondocks, far from a town of any appreciable size. This was about three years ago so maybe they have worked out some of the bugs. It certainly beat dial-up but was never as fast as they make it out to be in the ads.

I had an original modem that was very prone to failure but they replaced it with a newer model and it worked most of the time -- perhaps a problem every few months. But they did have good support to help you work though the problems. It comes with a large dish that is much larger than a direct TV type dish.

Mine was canted at an angle and had to go behind the house. My wife hated it because it was big and blocked the view and tended to collect dirt and spider webs (since it was adjusted precisely, you hesitated to clean it for fear you would knock it off target). You had to get someone to come out and install this dish.

Finally I was able broadband through AT&T (telephone) and no longer needed the service. We were very quick to cancel service and remove the dish. It was much better than dial-up and much worse than broadband over the telephone.

If you have to have it, it will speed things up a lot.

Wildblue I had a Wildblue satellite receiver for a couple of years. Worked fine. I only changed because a local dsl came available.

The only problems I had was the weather. When it rained hard or snowed, I lost connection. But it sure beat dial-up.

I have a neighbor that has Hughsnet. He loves it.

1 I forgot to write that 56kbs is the normal standard modem basic spped as comparison to higher ones...My upload spped is 1.1 Gigabits and download is 11.7 gigabits....not kbs....as a guide for you to consider upon as you make your choices....So I added the information here....Blessings...Annlee .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
