I am in the market for a digital camera and a ring flash for medical photography for less than $2K -- suggestions?

A few options I am assuming you are meaning Camera, Lens and flash for under $2k. If I am correct, I would suggest either the Awesome Canon 40D, which is on an instant rebate still I believe. Its 14bit processor gives awesome color and the very low grain allows higher ISO should you ever need to use it, And unlike the Nikons it holds its value very well and is the state of the art for the consumer currently!

It will work well for you for many years to come. A 2nd choice would be the Canon Rebel XSi. It is very similar to the 40D, but not as sturdy as it is lighter and designed more as an entry camera.

Both models offer live view, and with Macro its a great feature, esp because of the very shallow depth of field on a Macro lens. The only time I use Live View is when I am shooting Macro on my 180mm lens. You have a wide range of choices for lenses, however I would suggest the 100mm F2.

8 Macro so you can stay in your budget. The 180mm macro is awesome and I love it, but its more $$ but allows you to have more room between you and the subject if needed. The Tamron 180mm SP F3.5 is also a very good lens if you can find a good deal on it go for it.

With the 180mm lens you will need a ring light adapter that is 72mm and screws into the front filter threads of the lens, but they are pretty easy to fine. Also be aware that a true Macro lens is ALWAYS a fixed focal length (prime) lens, like the 100mm F2.8 Canon. No zooms are true macro.

A true Macro will render a 1:1 reproduction, and actually nowadays on the standard crop body cameras you get more than that, which can be very nice as well. That is why you can get in so close with a macro lens and have the magnifacation you need. Stick with one of the Canon Macro Ring light flash units, the 14 or 24.

Both are very very good and are easy to use. Often you can find a good deal on Ebay or sometimes even your local shop as some people get into Macro and don't realize how hard and detailed it is to get the right shot and then decide to do something else. Also remember, you get what you pay for!

If you buy something cheap, like sigma, you will get cheap looking images from it! Hope this helps. If you have any?

Send me a PM and I can help you out. I have used most of the Canon gear, lens & bodies alike, as well as many others in the workshops I do. Lenses The camera is not really the piece of equipment you really need to worry about. I would suggest either a Nikon D40, D50, or D60 for basic work. The D40/60 can only use AF-S lenses so this will limit what lenses you can use and jack up the price.

The D50 is discontinued so their prices have dropped a little. Another option is, if you know how to work camera's well, the Nikon D80. After you decide which camera body you want you then have to look at macro lenses.

I would recommend the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens. This lens can be bought in combination with the Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System for $1,196.82. This would leave you with $803.18 for the body.

That's more than enough for the Nikon D80 Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only) which comes in at $729.88. This leaves you $73.30 under budget! Also note that the selected macro lens IS in fact an AF-S lens so you could easily get the D40 or D60 and it would work just fine!

Also for macro work I would suggest a tripod or at least a shoulder rest to help stabilize you and your camera durring shooting. Hope this helps, Good luck! JD .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
