I am looking for a book I read several years ago. It was about a boy who lived in the desert with an older woman. I think she might have been his grandmother.

They lived underground. I remember one day his father comes and the boy goes with him to look for something like a medalion. While they are gone a rain storm comes and makes the desert bloom with all types of flowers.

I don't know the author or the title. I remember the cover being a light brown, tannish color. It was a paperback and it had some kind of raised circular decoration on it.
