Set realistic expectations. You're not going to do it straight through or you will fall asleep at the wheel. So plan what a good day's drive is, and make sure that you end up in a place that has motels or some place to sleep.
If you can afford the time, stop and do some sightseeing. (For example, Mt. Rushmore or Devils Tower might be on your way, they are worth stopping to see)If you have XM or Sirius radio, use them:-) Otherwise get lets of audio-books or music.
Stop, walk around, every 2-3 hours. Keep LOTS of water in the car and drink it. Make sure you have sunglasses.
Have your oil changed, have a mechanic check all your fluids and belts. Make sure your tires are properly inflated *and* make sure your spare tire is in good condition too. Buy a cigarette lighter adapter for your cell phone to keep it charged.
Bring a camera.
Practice sitting for long periods of time, preplan your route; making allowances for impulse stops along the way (also; make sure you will not be trying to cross the mountains on a goat trail - we lose people that way), make sure you know whether your cell phone carrier will cover you all the way; have your car checked out to make sure there isn't anything getting ready to go bad, if you will be travelling alone, books on (tape/CD/MP3) can help pass the time, plan to not drive more than 10 hours a day, and buy a raincoat or umbrella for when you get there.
My suggestion would be to wear comfy clothes, bring a cooler with plenty of water and stay hydrated, take a fiber suppliment.
Some really good suggestions here Have car serviced, get a can or 2 of Fix A Flat for emergency flats where changing a tire isn't possible. Carry extra water, for YOU and for your car, pack snacks to munch on, take a pillow and blanket, so If you get too tired you can pull over and snooze comfortably. Call a friend or family member along the way, just to let them know where you are, and that things are okay.
Take a digital camera with extra batteries and memory sticks, you are going to see some beautiful country, take your time and enjoy it, you may never get the chance again. OH any take a roll of TP, never know when you may have to find a bush ;-) .
Sleep before you leave and stop every day when you are tired and need sleep. Stay off the pills.
Stop frequently and walk a bit at every stop.
Thanks a lot guys.. these are really good suggestions. I will keep them in mind ashbkelley 6 months ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
