I find 4.1, 5.1, and 6.1 surround sound Dolby DD, DTS, and AC3 to be confusing. How is it set up?

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
