He was working on an aid/ system to benefit the hard of hearing. His interests were speech therapy and related problems, and the device was part of understanding how voice sounds were generated. What we call and use as a "system" of telephones came much later.
Even the 1st implementation in UK, was seen as a type of broadcasting system - to send the sound of a (classical) music concert direct to peoples homes without having to travel there. The person to person calling came later even dialing and self connecting calls did not arrive till mid 60s for many many people. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
