I have a 1997 Ford Contour that was stalling at lights and stops, now won't start at all..any ideas what it could be?

Ill give it a try, but no guarantees Check your pulley belts and battery...you never know. I fried a battery and almost my engine because I had a pulley that was broke and didn't know about it. AF ratio might be a concern here...try changing the fuel filter (probably no help but good practice) and your air filter.

Perhaps check the spark plugs and make sure the integrity of the distributer cap is sound. If none of those are it then its either the engine or fuel line. Maybe its a pump for the fuel line or it needs a flush.

If thats not it make sure your engine has compression, if not then there is the problem. Anything other than that im not sure what it is.

3 It's probably not the fuel pump. Low fuel pressure tends to cause problems when driving, not when stopping. Could be the EGR valve or injector problems, as A_H mentions.As I recall, that model has a single TB injector.

Your car is post OBDII, so any repair shop should have a scanner that can read out the DTCs and tell you what the problem is.

5 Like I said, get your codes read. If you could get the car to run, a lit-up MIL would tell you something is wrong, but it isn't running. It could be anything from the distributor to a timing belt.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
