I have a cupboard that reeks from some potatoes that went bad. How can I permanently remove the smell? I have tried Lysol and we've wiped and cleaned it thoroughly.
The smell still persists. Any ideas? Asked by dwdrums 52 months ago Similar questions: cupboard reeks potatoes permanently remove smell Home > Home Improvement.

This might sound nutty but it worked for me Last winter I totally and absolutely scorched a package of frozen french fries in my microwave. The package had one of those browning panels in the box that was supposed to make the fries golden brown, etc. Well, the time given on the package said 5-7 minutes and I set it for 5 minutes but my microwave is 1000 watts and I guess that was too much cause around 3 minutes the scorched smell was overwhelming. All of the microwave smelled burned - the inside, the door, everything.
The room smelled of it - it's a carpeted kitchen. I remembered that years ago I read in one of those Heloise books that vinegar helps with smells so I figured I had nothing to lose. I put a glass pie plate in the microwave and poured in about 1/2 cup of white vinegar.
Then closed the door and vowed to leave it alone for 3-4 days. For the room/carpet smell, I poured a cup of vinegar into a shallow glass pan and just put it on the floor under a table. The scorched smell in the room started to lessen within a day and I noticed the vinegar was evaporating after 3 days so I added another cup.
It took about 10 days but the room/carpet smell was fine after that. The microwave took a bit longer cause that smell was in the plastic body and door, plus when I tried running it, the scorched smell was blowing out of the vent.It took close to a month of keeping that dish filled in the microwave and just being patient but finally it was evident that it was ok. Final lesson: vinegar works wonders, it's cheap and available everywhere.
I would try a bleach solution... I keep an old dishwashing liquid bottle filled with 50% bleach and 50% water, under the sink at all times. It's handy for cleaning up just about everything...because it disinfects and deodorizes. For your cupboard, I would take a moderately wet old wash cloth, squirt some of the bleach and water mixture into the cupboard, and scrub it good with the wash cloth.
Let it set for a while, maybe 5 minutes, rinse out the wash rag a couple of times, wring it out to damp, and wipe the cupboard well. Leave the cupboard open to dry overnight. The bleach mixture should eliminate any odor from bacteria seeping into the wood.
You might want to do a small test area in a hidden area, just to be sure that you don't whiten out a stained shelf. Better safe than sorry.
Zero odor zeroodor.com Works like magic on every smell I've ever used it on and I'm fairly sure this was one of them. I use it primarily for pet odors. (Damn cat!) After I've used it, even the cats can't smell whatever it is anymore.
Rotten potatoes are the worste smell out. My suggestion would be to wash your cupboard out with hot soapy water with bleach and when dry try using nilodor which comes in 2 different ways 1 is in a spray mist bottle or a small consitrated bottle, you can either spray your cupboard or wipe it out with the consitrated 1 this product I always have in my cupboard I swear by it ,you can purchase it from any repritable supermarket good luck .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
