If they are aware your trying to access their network and they are OK with this, then hopefully they have a WiFi device they are using in their home, and they can bring this device to your home and use it in the same area where your computer is. If their device does not work, then the problem is going to be an interrupted signal/week signal, and the only thing that can be done, is to buy a device that will boost the signal power from their end, or you can buy a directional WiFi antenna, and point it directly at their home, etc.

My neighbors are my roommates parents and they know. They have att and before I had picked it up using a different wireless card (with the help of my neighbors daughter who said she didn't really do anything in order for the internet to work) and they gave me a long 25 character to put in. However there are about 4 walls between us.

Some times the signal stregnth is very good , most of the times low when I had a different wireless card. I thank you for your input and advice anymore would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dina 38specialgrl 5 months ago .

Well if your having a signal strength problem, then all you can do is trial and error testing to find the best place to get the best signal. What happened with the "previous" wireless card, why did you have to change? What wireless card are you using now?

What generation of wireless are your friends sharing (B,G,N)? If your wireless card connects via a USB port, are you connecting to your (desktop/tower; or Laptop) directly, or are you using a USB extension cord? If your computer is a tower/desktop, I would recommend connecting your USB based wireless card via a 6ft-12ft USB extension cable and then move the antenna around until you get as good of signal as you can and then temp mount to the wall/table/shelf and test this location for a few weeks to see if the signal strength stays strong, etc.If not, then try to move it around a little more when/if you need to.

First of all, I have to tell you this. Using your neighbors internet without their permission is considered illegal. But i'lll answer your question.

Most likely the cause of this that you are too far away from the access point. It could also be a physical barrier like a wall. Another cause could be that they are not broadcasting their SSID.So you can only join those if you know the network name.

What I suggest:1. Get their permission first.2. Then, you can get one of those high gang antennas or go for a easier mod like the "WindSurfer Wifi Booster".

Is the ssid name a long 25 character including letters and numbers that he had given me before when I had a different wireless card.?What would work better the long antenna or the wifi booster? Do you know of anything else that would help?
