If it's a fixed bead ring, the bead is attached to one end, and opening the wire perpendicular to each other will open the ring. If it's a captured bead ring, the two wire ends are pinching the ball and holding it in place. If the ring is opened up a little bit, the ball will drop out, leaving an open space.
The earring may also feature a ball that screws off. Try twisting the ball forward or backwards to loosen it. Sometimes they screw off leaving an empty gap where you can take the earring off or put it on.
