It can be numerous things, Thrush, Lichen Planus, canker sores, or Behcet's Syndrome . Do the ulcers look like the picture below? If so ask your doctor test for Behcets Syndrome, I started getting them back in 1990, outbreaks can be extremely painful and lasts for weeks.

I was never diagnosed by a doctor , no one could figure it out. I found Behcets Syndrome doing my own research. The only thing I found that helped the pain is Kank-A its a topical that foams a protective shieled and is numbing, works very well.

The only medication thats EVER works to get rid of the sores for me is Prednisone, LARGE doses of Prednisone. Good news about Behcets, it just stops on its own after a number of years, I haven't had a breakout in 3 years. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
