I need to display several widgets. Do I need a separate Applet / Bean / Servlet / ActiveX container for each widget?

Instead of using a several containers, one for each widget, you can create a composite drawing containing several widgets (a dashboard) and use a single container to display it. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
