I played a 2:35.1 dvd 0n my 32"tv and it plays like a small screen with black borders all the way round?

I would say it's your TV. You should go into your menu and you want to set it to "full screen" or something similar. Or there is a zoom function.

Your TV probably just switched back into standard ratio mode. Keep in mind that DVDs are 480 pixels x 720 pixels no matter what the ratio of the movie is. So on a 1040 x 1920 TV, you're going to see black borders all around the movie until you zoom in.

If you have an upconverting DVD, you can use your deck to expand the picture. But I have found TVs do a better job of blowing up the pictures than upconverting DVD decks. Better electronics.
