You need to go to a salon, have the old color you put in stripped out, and then get it colored like you want it. Seriously. Home hair dye is very hard on your hair, and putting more on top of what you have already done will cause it to get brittle, dry, break off, and possibly fall out.

Use the L'Oreal Hair Remover Kit. It will take out the black and leave your hair orange-ish. Then 1-2 hours later, dye your medium brown over it.

The orange-ish is actually a "blank canvas" for your new color. I used it to go from brunette to blonde and it worked very very well.

Actually, so did I with the same unfortunate result! I used Joy diswashing detergent AND because it was simply a nicer product, Neturgena Clarifying Shampoo - and it's working.
